Where to go for Independence Day

Independence Day on 7 September falls at the end of the dry season in central Brazil, just before spring. When it lands next to a weekend, it is a good time for clear rivers, wetland wildlife and northeastern beaches.

Budget-friendly

  • Maceió · Alagoas

The capital of Alagoas has calm, reef-sheltered beaches, and at low tide rafts go out to natural pools off Pajuçara. Drier weather returns to the coast around this time, and the waterfront has plenty of places for seafood and tapioca.

Typically around 7 September: high 28°C (82°F), low 23°C (73°F), rain on 54% of days.

Mid-range

  • Jardim · Mato Grosso do Sul

Near Bonito, Jardim is a base for snorkelling in clear spring-fed rivers and for the Buraco das Araras sinkhole, where red-and-green macaws nest. Drier weather helps keep the rivers clear for floating and swimming.

Typically around 7 September: high 33°C (92°F), low 18°C (64°F), rain on 20% of days.

  • Natal · Rio Grande do Norte

The capital of Rio Grande do Norte pairs city beaches with the dunes and lagoons of Genipabu to the north, where buggy rides are a common outing. Seafood and carne de sol are local staples, and the coastal dry season is starting.

Typically around 7 September: high 28°C (82°F), low 25°C (77°F), rain on 36% of days.

Splurge

  • Corumbá · Mato Grosso do Sul

On the Paraguay River, Corumbá is a gateway to the southern Pantanal wetlands. In the dry months, wildlife gathers around the remaining water, making birds, caimans and capybaras easier to see on boat trips and lodge stays.

Typically around 7 September: high 37°C (98°F), low 21°C (70°F), rain on 9% of days.

About Independence Day

Independence Day marks 7 September 1822, when Prince Pedro, the son of the Portuguese king, declared Brazil's independence from Portugal on the banks of the Ipiranga stream in São Paulo, a moment remembered by the cry "Independence or death". He was crowned as Pedro I, the first emperor of Brazil, later that year.

Traditions

Civic and military parades, known as desfiles de 7 de Setembro, are held across the country. The largest takes place on the Esplanada dos Ministérios in Brasília, attended by the President. Schools often take part in local parades, and the national flag is widely displayed.
