About Canada Day

Canada Day, on 1 July, marks the anniversary of Confederation in 1867, when the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were united as a single federal dominion under the British North America Act, now known as the Constitution Act, 1867. The holiday was called Dominion Day until it was renamed Canada Day in 1982.

Traditions

Celebrations take place across the country, with the largest centred on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Typical events include fireworks, concerts, parades, citizenship ceremonies and community picnics, and many people wear red and white or display the maple leaf flag.
