Day of the Maroons

The Day of the Maroons in Suriname marks the anniversary of the peace treaty concluded on 10 October 1760 between the Ndyuka Maroons, descendants of Africans who escaped slavery, and the Dutch colonial authorities. The day honours the Maroon peoples of Suriname and their struggle for freedom.

How it is marked

Maroon communities celebrate with cultural events featuring traditional music, dance, dress and food, both in Paramaribo and in the interior.

Fiji Day

Fiji Day is the country's national day and marks Fiji's independence from the United Kingdom on 10 October 1970. The date also recalls 10 October 1874, when Fijian chiefs signed the Deed of Cession that made Fiji a British colony.

How it is marked

Celebrations include flag-raising ceremonies, official speeches and parades, with cultural performances and community events held around the country.

Mazingira Day

Mazingira Day is a public holiday in Kenya dedicated to the environment, mazingira being the Swahili word for it. It replaced Utamaduni Day on 10 October and is intended to promote environmental conservation and climate action.

How it is marked

Kenyans are encouraged to plant trees, clean up public spaces and take part in conservation activities organised by government bodies, schools and community groups.

National Day

National Day, also called Double Tenth Day, commemorates the Wuchang Uprising of 10 October 1911, which led to the fall of the Qing dynasty and the founding of the Republic of China. It is a public holiday in Taiwan.

How it is marked

Celebrations are held in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei with an address by the President, parades and performances, and a fireworks display is staged in the evening.

Pchum Ben Day

Pchum Ben is one of the most important religious festivals in Cambodia, devoted to honouring deceased relatives and ancestors going back seven generations. It concludes a fifteen-day period in the tenth month of the Khmer lunar calendar, and the final days are a public holiday.

How it is marked

Families visit pagodas, often several, to offer food to monks on behalf of the dead, believing that the merit made can ease the suffering of ancestral spirits. Before dawn people also scatter or throw rice balls around temple grounds for wandering spirits, and many city dwellers travel back to their home villages.
