About Day of Reconciliation

The Day of Reconciliation, on 16 December, was introduced after the end of apartheid to promote national unity. The date carries different histories for different communities: Afrikaners had commemorated the 1838 Battle of Blood River on that day, while in 1961 it marked the founding of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress.

Traditions

Official events and community gatherings focus on reconciliation and nation-building. The date also falls at the start of the main summer holiday period, and many people use it for travel and family time.
