About May Day
The Early May Bank Holiday, commonly called May Day, falls on the first Monday of May. It was introduced as a bank holiday in 1978. Its timing links it both to centuries-old spring customs celebrating the start of summer and to International Workers' Day on 1 May, although the holiday itself is held on the Monday.
Traditions
Traditional customs in some towns and villages include maypole dancing, Morris dancing and the crowning of a May Queen. Trade unions and labour groups may hold marches and rallies, and many people use the long weekend for outings and family time.
