Christmas Day on 25 December celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is one of the main feasts of the Christian year. The date has been used for the feast in Rome since at least the fourth century. It is a public holiday in many countries, including some where Christians are a minority. Some Orthodox churches that follow the Julian calendar celebrate Christmas on 7 January.
Traditions
Christians attend church services, and the day is widely spent with family. Common customs include decorating a Christmas tree, exchanging gifts, singing carols and sharing a large festive meal. Dishes and sweets vary greatly from country to country, as do figures associated with bringing presents to children.
