About Armistice Day
Armistice Day on 11 November marks the end of the First World War in 1918. Belgium was occupied for most of the war and parts of the country, especially West Flanders, saw some of the heaviest fighting on the Western Front. The day honours Belgian soldiers and civilians who died in that war and in later conflicts.
Traditions
Wreath-laying ceremonies take place at war memorials throughout the country, including at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Congress Column in Brussels. In Ypres, a large ceremony is held at the Menin Gate, where the Last Post is sounded, and poppies are worn as a symbol of remembrance, particularly in Flanders.
