About Armistice Day
Armistice Day on 11 November marks the end of the First World War. The armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the forest near Compiègne in the early morning of 11 November 1918 and came into effect at eleven o'clock. France made the day a national holiday in 1922 to honour the dead of that war.
Traditions
Ceremonies are held at war memorials in nearly every French town and village, often with the reading of the names of local soldiers who died. In Paris, the President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe. The bleuet, a cornflower, is worn as the French symbol of remembrance.
