About Easter
Easter, known in Bulgaria as Velikden, is celebrated according to the Orthodox calendar, so it often falls on a different date from Easter in Western churches. It is the most important religious feast in Bulgaria, and both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays.
Traditions
Eggs are dyed during Holy Week, with the first egg traditionally coloured red. At the midnight service people light candles and greet each other with "Hristos voskrese" (Christ is risen), answered with "Voistina voskrese" (Truly he is risen). Families then crack eggs against each other in a game called chukane, and share kozunak, a sweet braided bread, and often roast lamb.
