About Independence Day
Independence Day on 22 September marks the proclamation of Bulgaria's full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. Although Bulgaria had been self-governing since 1878, it was formally a vassal principality. Prince Ferdinand proclaimed independence in Veliko Tarnovo, the old capital, and the country became a kingdom, with Ferdinand taking the title of tsar.
Traditions
Official celebrations are centred on Veliko Tarnovo, including ceremonies at the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs, where the independence manifesto was read. Flags are displayed nationwide, and wreath-laying ceremonies and cultural events are held in towns across the country.
