About Christmas Day
Christmas Day, Noël, is a public holiday in France. Much of the celebration takes place on the evening of 24 December with the réveillon, a long festive meal shared with family, followed by Christmas Day itself, when presents are opened and families gather again.
Traditions
The réveillon often includes oysters, foie gras, smoked salmon and a roast such as turkey or capon, ending with a bûche de Noël, a log-shaped cake. In Provence, families traditionally serve thirteen desserts, and many homes set up a nativity scene with small clay figures called santons.
