About German Unity Day

German Unity Day on 3 October marks the reunification of Germany in 1990, when the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany. It is the country's national holiday and the only public holiday set by federal law. It replaced the earlier West German day of remembrance held on 17 June, which recalled the 1953 uprising in East Germany.

Traditions

The main official celebration moves each year to the state that currently holds the presidency of the Bundesrat, with a ceremony attended by national leaders and a public festival for citizens. Elsewhere, towns hold concerts, exhibitions and open days, and many people simply enjoy a day off.
