About Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday, called Eerste Paasdag in Dutch, is followed by a second Easter holiday on Monday. Besides church services and family meals, Easter in the Netherlands has some regional customs, the best known being the Easter bonfires of the eastern provinces.
Traditions
In the east of the country, especially in Twente and the Achterhoek, villages build large Easter bonfires known as paasvuren and light them on the evening of Easter Sunday. Elsewhere, families often enjoy an extended Easter brunch with eggs and paasbrood, a sweet fruit bread, and children search for hidden eggs.
