About Easter Sunday
Easter, Pasqua, is among the most important religious festivals in Italy. Masses are held across the country, and at midday the Pope gives the Urbi et Orbi blessing from St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Many towns also hold local Holy Week and Easter rites.
Traditions
Typical sweets include the colomba, a dove-shaped cake topped with almonds and sugar, and large chocolate eggs with a surprise hidden inside. In Florence, the Scoppio del Carro takes place outside the cathedral, when a decorated cart loaded with fireworks is set off during the Easter Mass. Lamb dishes are common on the family table.
