About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, known in Türkiye as Ramazan Bayramı and popularly as Şeker Bayramı, the Sugar Feast, marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting in the Islamic calendar. Its date follows the lunar Hijri calendar, so it moves earlier by about eleven days each year in the Gregorian calendar. In Türkiye the festival lasts three days, all of which are public holidays.
Traditions
The festival begins with a special morning prayer at mosques. People put on new or best clothes and visit family, starting with older relatives, whose hands younger people traditionally kiss as a sign of respect. Children receive sweets and small amounts of money, and many people also visit the graves of relatives around the festival. Sweets such as baklava are widely shared.
