About Independence Day
Independence Day marks the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on 24 August 1991. Independence was confirmed by a referendum on 1 December 1991, in which a large majority voted in favour. Under martial law it is a working day.
Traditions
The day is marked with official ceremonies and the national flag is widely displayed; many people wear vyshyvanka, the embroidered shirt. During martial law, large public events and parades are generally not held.
