About Labor Day

Labor Day, on the first Monday of September, honors American workers and the labor movement. It emerged from union parades and campaigns in the late nineteenth century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Unlike International Workers' Day on 1 May, which is observed in much of the world, the US holiday has its own date and origins.

Traditions

The long weekend is widely regarded as the unofficial end of summer and the start of the school and autumn season. Common activities include barbecues, trips and public events, and some unions and cities still hold parades.
