About Independence Day
Independence Day on 25 March commemorates the start of the Greek War of Independence against Ottoman rule in 1821, which led to the establishment of an independent Greek state. The date also coincides with the Orthodox feast of the Annunciation, Evangelismos, which gives the day a double national and religious significance.
Traditions
A military parade is held in Athens, and schoolchildren march in parades in towns and villages across the country, carrying flags. Church services mark the Annunciation. The traditional meal of the day is fried salt cod served with skordalia, a garlic sauce, as fish is permitted on this feast during Lent.
