About Epiphany
In Italy, Epiphany is closely linked to the figure of the Befana, a kindly old woman of folk tradition who is said to travel on a broomstick. The day closes the Christmas season, as summed up in the saying "L'Epifania tutte le feste porta via", meaning Epiphany takes all the holidays away.
Traditions
On the night of 5 January, children hang up stockings that the Befana fills with sweets and small gifts for those who have been good, and lumps of coal, often made of sugar, for those who have misbehaved. Many towns hold Befana events, parades and markets.
