About Easter Monday
Easter Monday, Poniedziałek Wielkanocny, is a public holiday in Poland that extends the Easter celebrations. It is also known as Lany Poniedziałek, Wet Monday, because of the water customs associated with the day. Its date depends on Easter, which Poland celebrates according to the Western church calendar, so it falls between late March and late April.
Traditions
The best-known custom is śmigus-dyngus, in which people splash each other with water, from a sprinkle to buckets and water guns. Historically boys drenched girls, and the custom was linked to wishes for health and fertility. Today it is mostly playful, especially among children and young people, and the day is otherwise spent visiting family.
