About Good Friday
Good Friday falls within Semana Santa, Holy Week, one of the most important periods of the religious and cultural calendar in Spain. Celebrations differ from region to region, and in many cities the processions organised by local brotherhoods date back several centuries.
Traditions
Religious brotherhoods carry elaborate floats, called pasos, bearing sculpted scenes of the Passion through the streets, often accompanied by penitents in long robes and pointed hoods and by brass bands. Seville, Málaga, Valladolid and Zamora are among the cities known for their processions. Torrijas, slices of bread soaked in milk or wine and fried, are a typical sweet of the season.
