About Labor Day

Labour Day on 1 May is International Workers' Day, honouring the labour movement and the rights won by workers. The date recalls the campaign for an eight-hour working day in the late nineteenth century. In Spain it is a national public holiday known as the Fiesta del Trabajo.

Traditions

Trade unions organise marches and rallies in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities, raising demands on wages, employment and working conditions. For many others it is simply a day off, often spent outdoors or with family.
