About Green Monday
Green Monday, Kathara Deftera or Clean Monday, is the first day of Great Lent in the Orthodox calendar. It falls 48 days before Orthodox Easter, so its date moves each year. It follows the carnival season, Apokries, and marks the start of the fasting period leading up to Easter.
Traditions
Families spend the day outdoors, and flying kites is a widespread custom. The meal follows Lenten rules, without meat or dairy, and typically includes lagana, a flat bread traditionally baked for this day, taramosalata, olives, pickled vegetables, halva and seafood such as squid, octopus and shellfish.
