About Epiphany
Epiphany, known in Greece as Theofania or Ta Fota, the Lights, is celebrated on 6 January and commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan. It closes the Christmas season, which in Greek tradition runs for twelve days from Christmas Day.
Traditions
Priests perform the Great Blessing of the Waters. In coastal towns and on the islands, after the service a priest throws a cross into the sea, a harbour, a river or a lake, and swimmers dive to retrieve it; the one who brings it back is believed to receive a blessing for the year. People also take home holy water.
