About Republic Day

Republic Day, on 26 January, marks the day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into effect and the country became a republic. The date was chosen because of its link to the Purna Swaraj declaration of complete independence by the Indian National Congress, which was first celebrated on 26 January 1930. It is one of India's three national holidays.

Traditions

The main celebration is a parade in New Delhi, where the President takes the salute and military contingents, cultural groups and tableaux from the states pass in procession. A foreign leader is usually invited as chief guest. Flag-hoisting ceremonies are held in schools, offices and communities across the country.
