About Culture Day
Culture Day, Bunka no Hi, held on 3 November, promotes freedom, peace and culture. The date was formerly celebrated as the birthday of Emperor Meiji, and on 3 November 1946 the current Constitution of Japan was promulgated. The holiday in its present form was established in 1948.
Traditions
The Order of Culture is conferred at the Imperial Palace on outstanding contributors to arts and sciences. Many schools and universities hold culture festivals, and museums, galleries and local communities organise exhibitions and cultural events, some with free admission.
