About Emperor's Birthday
The Emperor's Birthday celebrates the birthday of the reigning emperor, so its date changes with each reign. Emperor Naruhito, who acceded to the throne in 2019, was born on 23 February 1960. Under his father, now Emperor Emeritus Akihito, the holiday was held on 23 December.
Traditions
The Imperial Palace in Tokyo usually opens to the public for a birthday greeting, during which the Emperor appears on a balcony with members of the imperial family and briefly addresses the crowds.
