About Mountain Day
Mountain Day, Yama no Hi, is one of Japan's most recent national holidays, first observed in 2016. It is intended to give people opportunities to become familiar with mountains and to appreciate their blessings, reflecting the importance of mountains in Japan's landscape and culture.
Traditions
Many people go hiking or travel to the mountains and the countryside. Because the holiday falls shortly before Obon, when many people return to their family homes to honour their ancestors, it is often combined with summer leave.
