About Showa Day
Showa Day falls on 29 April, the birthday of Emperor Shōwa, who reigned from 1926 to 1989. After his death the date was kept as a holiday under the name Greenery Day, and it was renamed Showa Day in 2007. It encourages people to reflect on the Shōwa era, a period of war, defeat and post-war reconstruction and growth.
Traditions
Showa Day usually marks the start of Golden Week, a cluster of holidays in late April and early May. Many people use the period for travel and family visits, and some museums and exhibitions focus on the Shōwa era around the date.
