About Freedom Day
Freedom Day marks the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, when a largely bloodless military coup led by the Armed Forces Movement overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship. The revolution opened the way to democratic elections, a new constitution and the independence of Portugal's African colonies.
Traditions
The revolution is named after the red carnations that civilians placed in soldiers' rifles, and the flower is widely worn on the day. A popular parade is held along Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon, and a formal session takes place in Parliament. The song "Grândola, Vila Morena", one of the radio signals for the coup, is often sung.
