About Labor Day

Labour Day, the Dia do Trabalhador, is held on 1 May as International Workers' Day, honouring the labour movement and the rights won by workers. In Portugal, the first May Day after the Carnation Revolution, in 1974, brought very large crowds onto the streets and became a landmark of the new democracy.

Traditions

Trade union confederations hold marches and rallies in Lisbon, Porto and other cities, focusing on wages and working conditions. Many people also use the day off for outings with family and friends.
