About Restoration of Independence Day

Restoration of Independence Day marks 1 December 1640, when a group of Portuguese nobles rose up in Lisbon against the rule of the Spanish Habsburg kings, who had also reigned over Portugal since 1580. The Duke of Braganza was acclaimed King John IV, and a long war followed before Spain recognised Portuguese independence in 1668.

Traditions

Official ceremonies are held at the Restauradores square in Lisbon, named after the restorers of independence, around the monument that commemorates the event. The holiday was suspended between 2013 and 2015 and restored in 2016.
